A man is beaten to death in the Middle East, while in Stockholm a young woman disappears on her way home from work. Two events that will prove to be linked to each other. Since Martin Beck has resigned, Steinar Hovland leads the search for the woman, but Martin is soon pulled into the case when he helps Säpo to investigate a suspected terrorist.

A popular junior hockey coach is found knifed to death. Is his murder related to his side project of teaching refugees to skate? Martin Beck, who has returned in a higher post, is struggling to find a stand-in for Steinar, who is keen to stay in his new role as team leader.

The Beck group, with Alex Beijer as the new team leader, is handed the case of a 12-year-old girl who found her mother dead underneath the stairs at home. Was it an accident? It turns out that the family are living under an assumed and protected identity and the case takes several surprising twists.

A man walks into a restaurant, shoots its owner and then quickly disappears. The murder seems to be a gang related and there are no witnesses who can remember what happened. Under the leadership of new boss Alex along with Martin Beck, the team investigate the case which turns out to be a sensitive matter for one of the police officers.
