Based on the books by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, Beck follows Martin Beck and his eccentric partner Gunvald Larsson as they investigate murders which often highlight the flawed social structure of Stockholm, Sweden.

Over the course of 30+ feature length episodes, Martin Beck goes from being an unhappily married man and father of two young teenagers, to a divorced man in a happily unmarried relationship with Rhea Nielsen, who Beck meets during a investigation into a dead man to whom Nielson was the landlady.

Beck gets several promotions throughout the series, from Detective to Inspector, and eventually Chief of the National Murder Squad, though he hates the idea of being confined to desk work.
