Ben Wheatley To Direct Tomb Raider Sequel

Deadline reports that Ben Wheatley (Kill List) will direct a sequel to Roar Uthaug’s reboot of the Tomb Raider movies based on the video game franchise, with Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) confirmed to reprise her role as Lara Croft.

In the first film, bike courier Lara Croft is the daughter of an eccentric adventurer (Dominic West) who vanished seven years before. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire and is driven to solve his mysterious death.

Lara leaves everything she knows behind in search of her father’s last-known destination, a mythical island off the coast of Japan, whereupon she meets the villainous Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins) and takes on the deadly Trinity organisation who are intent on global genocide.

Whilst the first film was loosely based on the 2013 game which rebooted the the franchise, it is not known whether the movie sequel will follow the story of the game sequels Rise of the Tomb Raider or Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Production for the Tomb Raider sequel begins early next year with a theatrical release date slated for 19th March 2021.
