Beware Of Children Wins Best Film At Göteborg

At the 43rd Göteborg Film Festival on Saturday, the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film and a prize of one million Swedish crowns was presented to Beware Of Children (Barn), directed by Dag Johan Haugerud.

During a fight in the school yard, Lykke, the daughter of a prominent Labour Party politician, kills classmate Jamie, the son of a local right wing-politician. However, the question of guilt is just the starting point as the community responds to the tragedy and its aftermath, and begin to ask not only how could it happen, but how can they possibly move on from it?

The Jury, consisting of directors Mia Hansen-Løve, Yonfan, and Sofia Norlin, alongside producer Marianne Slot, said in their deliberation: “It is an inspiring reflexion about the intricacy of education from an adult perspective. It questions the innocence of one’s childhood in a captivating way. Human relationships are portrayed with sensitivity and subtlety.”

Elsewhere at the festival, Henriette Steenstrup picked up the Dragon Award for Best Actor in Beware Of Children, while the Audience Dragon Award and the FIPRESCI film critic’s award both went to Henrik Schyffert for his debut feature Uje.
