Casting Announced For The Emigrants Remake

Lisa Carlehed (Psychosia) and Gustaf Skarsgård (Vikings) have been announced as leads for The Emigrants, directed by Erik Poppe (The King’s Choice), as filming readies to begin in September.

Adapted by Siv Rajendram Eliassen and Anne Bache-Wiig from the novels by Vilhem Moberg, The Emigrants follows Kristina and Karl-Oscar Nilsson, who emigrate to America from poverty stricken Sweden during the 1850s on a long and dangerous journey in the hope of a better life for their children.

Oscar nominated films The Emigrants(1971) and The New Land(1972), directed by Jan Troell, were both adapted from the same source material and Liv Ullmann, who originally played Kristina, now returns as Kristina’s mother, Anna. Sofia Helin (The Bridge) also stars as Judit.

Erik Poppe said: “With The Emigrants I want to show, through Kristina’s eyes, her and Karl-Oscar’s love and struggle for a better life. How far are you willing to go to save your children… It is a timeless story about who we are, where we come from and our dreams.”

The Emigrants begins filming this September in western Götaland, in a move from its planned location in the Czech Republic due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is slated to receive a theatrical release on Christmas Day 2021.
