Iceland’s RÚV Orders Political Drama The Minister

Variety reports that RÚV has ordered Sagafilm (Stella Blómkvist) to produce new political dramedy The Minister, about a politician with bipolar disorder who becomes Prime Minister.

In the series, Hrefna is hired as an aide to new Prime Minister Benedikt Rikhardsson and discovers that he has bipolar disorder. However, Benedikt starts to make erratic decisions when he stops taking his medication so Hrefna must conceal his illness from the public in order to protect her own job.

CEO of Sagafilm Nordic, Kjartan Thor Thordarson, said: “The Minister echoes what’s happening today in many countries where people were so desperate to get rid of ‘old politicians’ that they elected folks they knew very little about and now they’re stuck with them… We’ve had three governments overthrown in the last three years in Iceland.”

Sagafilm’s seductive neo-noir crime thriller, Stella Blómkvist, recently shattered records when it premiered on Icelandic SVOD service Síminn Premium, and will be available on Viaplay across Scandinavia from 9th February.
