Director Janus Metz (Borg McEnroe) and his anthropologist wife Sine Plambech will take their latest documentary collaboration, Heartbound (Hjertelandet), to the Toronto Film Festival (6 – 16 September) for its world premiere.
Heartbound continues Metz and Plambech’s portrayal of globalisation told through a series of marriages between Thai women and Danish men that began in 2007 with Love On Delivery (Fra Thailand til Thy) and its companion piece Ticket to Paradise (Fra Thy til Thailand) in 2008.
Since arriving in Denmark 25 years ago to marry Niels, former sex worker Sommai has helped women from her village in Thailand to marry Danish men. There are now over 900 Thai-Danish marriages in Northern Jutland.
The film follows four of these couples over ten years in an intimate chronicle that explores universal questions of love and romance, dreams and everyday hardship, life and death, and the very nature of family.
