Jodie Foster To Direct Woman At War Remake

Deadline has revealed that Jodie Foster will direct and star in an English language remake of Benedikt Erlingsson’s second feature Woman at War (Kona fer í stríð), selected as Iceland’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

Woman at War follows Halla, an independent woman who declares war on the local aluminium industry. She resorts to sabotage and is willing to risk everything to protect the Icelandic highlands, until a Ukrainian orphan enters her life. The remake will relocate the story to the to the American West.

Jodie Foster told Deadline: “This movie thrilled me beyond words. I am so excited to helm a new American imagining of this relevant, beautiful, inspiring story. The character of Halla is a warrior for the planet, a strong woman who risks it all to do the right thing. But not without some serious mishaps along the way.”

“I can’t wait to play her. I’m always drawn to a bold and quirky mixture of humor and emotion. This one speaks for our time. It is an honor to take the reins from the talented director Benedikt Erlingsson.”

Since its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it picked up four awards during Critics‘ Week, Woman at War has won the Nordic Council Film Prize and European Parliament‘s LUX Film Prize, with Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir nominated for Best Actress at the forthcoming European Film Awards.
