Lars Hjortshøj Headlines Viaplay Rom Com

Viaplay has announced that its new eight-part romantic comedy, Big Lars, will launch next month starring comedian Lars Hjortshøj (Klown) as a failed version of himself alongside a number of special guests.

Nothing in Lars’ (Lars Hjortshøj) acting career so far has really measured up. His only TV appearances have been on minor shows and in small and embarrassing roles, so he throws himself into an increasingly absurd quest for recognition.

But in the midst of his wild plans, Lars finds love in the form of Julie (Julie Agnete Vang), an actor who runs a small children’s theatre. Julie is childless and has decided to have one with the help of a donor, so when Lars finds out that he has top quality semen, he sees a chance to win her heart.

Like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Big Lars blurs the line between reality and fiction, featuring a number of Danish celebrities who play fictionalised versions of themselves. Ellen Hillingsø (Rita) co-stars as Lars’s ex-wife Ellen, while Martin Brygmann (Italian For Beginners) is his best friend and neighbour.

Filippa Wallestam, Chief Content Officer for Viaplay, said: “Lars Hjortshøj is one of Denmark’s most creative comedians and Big Lars brings deft humour to a familiar dilemma – is it more important that others recognise us or that we keep sight of ourselves? This is an ideal format to take his unique talent, together with a wide range of Danish stars playing exaggerated versions of themselves, to audiences across the Nordic region.”

Big Lars (Store Lars) is directed by Morten Boesdal Halvorsen (Klassen) and premieres 23rd April across the Nordic region on Viaplay.
