Netflix Reveals Casting For Vinterviken 2021

As production begins in Stockholm, Netflix has announced casting for Vinterviken 2021, a modern adaptation of Mats Wahl’s acclaimed novel Vinterviken which was last adapted for the big screen in 1996.

This new incarnation of the classic love story is set in Stockholm 2021 and follows Elisabeth and John-John who are raised in the same city but whose lives are poles apart. Socially, economically and culturally, they couldn’t be more different… until the day they start in the same class at high school.

Elsa Öhrn makes her acting debut as Elisabeth while John-John is played by Mustapha Aarab (Björnstad) alongside a cast rounded out by Magnus Krepper (Queen Of Hearts), Loreen (Eurovision), Marika Lagercrantz (Vendetta), Albin Grenholm, Otto Hargne, Simon Mezher, Jonay Pineda Skallak and Elsa Bergström Terent.

Elsa Öhrn said: “It feels exciting to be part of this new version of Vinterviken where the overall societal problems are the same – but adapted to present time… Elisabeth feels more complex in this version and the contrasts between her and John-John are even more present – but that’s probably why they are drawn to each other.”

Mustapha Aarab added: “The original film really touched me in many ways and I hope this new version will both shine a light on important topics in society and at the same time entertain. I am really proud to be part of this film and can’t wait to share it with my family, friends and the Netflix viewers across the globe.”

Vinterviken 2021, directed by Alexis Almström, will premiere globally on Netflix in 2021 and then air on SVT in 2022.
