A new trailer has been released for Pernilla August’s return to directorial duties with The Serious Game (Den Allvarsamma Liken), based on Hjalmar Söderberg’s 1912 novel of the same name.
August told Expressen: “I longed to tell a century old story and a love story. So you could say that it was two birds with one stone. It’s such a beautiful story.”
“However, it was incredibly difficult. How do you make something from the turn of the century into something that we can believe in? And how do you make a love story that feels true?”
The story follows Arvid (Sverrir Gudnason) and Lydia (Karin Franz Korlof) who meet in the archipelago on a beautiful summer’s evening. They immediately fall in love. They begin a romance but because of social circumstances, they drift apart and marry elsewhere.
Ten years later, they meet again. The dream of the pure, unspoiled love is magnetic and they begin a passionate affair. But it will mean greater sacrifices than either of them could imagine.
The Serious Game premieres in Sweden on September 9th 2016.
