Nicolas Winding Refn Reboots Maniac Cop

Nicolas Winding Refn (Neon Demon) is to reboot the 1988 cult slasher movie Maniac Cop as a series for HBO and will serve as its showrunner, with John Hyams (Z Nation) on board to share directing duties.

Maniac Cop follows a killer in uniform who unleashes mayhem on the streets of Los Angeles. As the bloodthirsty tormentor stalks the city, some believe that he is a supernatural manifestation, and the ensuing paranoia descends into social disorder.

Nicolas Winding Refn said: “I’ve always been a devoted admirer of John Hyams, We’ve been talking about a re-imagining of the Maniac Cop films for a number of years, but… we found ourselves wanting to explore the world we were creating in greater depth.”

“This show will be an unadulterated, action-packed horror odyssey. Given the current state of the world, though, Maniac Cop will also be a strong commentary on the decline of civilization”.
