Noomi Rapace To Star In Bloody Hamlet Tragedy

Ali Abassi’s (Border) third feature is set to be a gender swap interpretation of Hamlet, written by Icelandic poet Sjón with Noomi Rapace (Dragon Tattoo) on board to star.
In Shakespeare’s work, the ghost of the King of Denmark tells his son, Hamlet, that he was murdered by his own brother, Claudius. The ghost wants revenge and orders Hamlet to kill Claudius who has crowned himself king and, in so doing, denied Hamlet the throne.
Noomi Rapace said: “Hamlet is a dream project in its purest and most explosive way. I’ve been hoping, dreaming, wishing for this as long as I’ve been an actress… To take on a Danish story with a Scandinavian touch and bring it out into the world with this group of people is a dream.”
Ali Abbasi added: “Shakespeare stole the Hamlet story from us. Now it’s our turn to claim it back and make a version so insane and so bloody that it makes him turn in his grave. Let’s make Hamlet great again!”
Hamlet is scheduled to begin principal photography in Autumn 2021.
