Paul Greengrass Plans Movie About Norwegian Tragedy

Bergens Tidende reports that British director Paul Greengrass is planning a film about the 2011 terrorist attack in Norway carried out by far-right extremist Anders Behring Breivik, based on the book One Of Us by Åsne Seierstad.

On 22 July 2011 Breivik detonated a van in Oslo killing eight people, then shot dead 69 people at a summer camp on the island of Utøya. In August 2012 he was convicted of mass murder, causing a fatal explosion, and terrorism.

Greengrass told BT: “What happened on July 22 was a huge challenge for democracy and the open Norwegian society. It was a bloody attack on all the values Norway stands for… We need to ask questions, and reveal truths.”

However, the plan is for the film to not only reconstruct the tragic events of that day, but also show how the nation responded to the attacks.

Seierstad said: “If anyone can make a good movie about July 22nd, it is Paul Greengrass. He is one of the world’s most acclaimed directors and has made films about other tragedies and serious incidents with great sensitivity and understanding.”
