Although falling short of Disney juggernaut Frozen 2 in the race for first place, A Piece Of My Heart (En del av mitt hjärta), the jukebox musical composed by the legendary Tomas Ledin, edged its way past four Hollywood blockbusters to claim second place and become the most watched Swedish film of 2020. For its international release, Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA has arranged new versions of the songs with English lyrics.
Strategic Analyst for the Swedish Film Institute, Josefin Schröder, said: “2020 was a challenging year for the Swedish film industry, to say the least. The whole value chain was affected, from cancelled and more expensive productions, to loss of revenue for distributors and cinemas. The digital development greatly intensified during the pandemic.”
“The interest in watching film, and Swedish film in particular, has been considerable. Closed cinemas and cancelled releases do not seem to have had an effect on the consumer’s demand for film content – rather the opposite. During the year, film viewing via video on demand increased heavily and digital services made up the majority of film consumption in 2020.”
