Sweden Shortlists I Am Greta For 2021 Oscars

The Swedish Oscar Committee has announced a shortlist of three films to be considered for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards: Roy Andersson’s Venice winner About Endlessness, Amanda Kernell’s Sundance hit Charter, and Nathan Grossman’s documentary I Am Greta.

Steffen Andersen-Møller, Head of the International Department at the Swedish Film Institute, said: “I think the committee has made a very good choice. Three very different films, but all of them show the breadth of Swedish film today, as well as attracting the attention of an international audience at some of the world’s leading film festivals.”

The 93rd Academy Awards will be presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences during a gala ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday 25th April 2021. Sweden’s final submission will be announced on 3rd November 2020.

About Endlessness

In this dreamlike contemplation on human existence, a mosaic of stories and meaningless moments are juxtaposed against important historical events: a couple float over war-torn Cologne; a dad stops to tie his daughter’s shoes in the rain; teenage girls dance outside a cafe; while a defeated army marches towards a prisoner of war camp.

Charter

After a difficult divorce, awaits a final custody verdict and hasn’t seen her children in two months. So, when her son calls her in the middle of the night, Alice takes action and abducts the children on an illicit charter trip to the Canary Islands. If she can reconnect with them it might change the outcome of the custody case, but she is soon wanted for kidnapping.

I Am Greta
Directed by Nathan Grossman

Documentary about teenage Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg who started a school strike to raise awareness about the climate and asked: if you don’t care about my future on earth, why should I care about my future in school? Within months, her strike had evolved into a global movement and Greta was world famous.
