The Cost Of An Oscar For The Hundred Year Old Man

On Sunday, Eva Von Bahr and Love Larsson are nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Make-Up for their work on The Hundred Year Old Man. However, the experience has opened their eyes to the financial burden of success.
As soon as the nomination had been announced, the film’s US distribution company called to ask who would be paying for the campaign. In an interview with SVT, Eva Von Bahr said:
“I didn’t understand what they meant. It was only when I went online and looked and saw what it cost. They put $10 million into the marketing budget for an Oscar film. We have no money at all.”
Despite the lack of funds, a publicist was eventually brought on board to raise the profile of the film:
“An advertisement in Variety or The Hollywood Reporter costs $23,000 so a publicist’s job is mainly to get reporters to conduct interviews so that we get free PR and people get to know about the movie.”
Eva von Bahr and Love Larson recently took the prize for Best Make-Up at this year’s Guldbagge awards for their work on Hannes Holm’s En man som heter Ove. In the Oscar race they face competition from: Black Mass, Concussion, Legend, Mad Max, Mr. Holmes, and The Revenant.
The 88th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on February 28th 2016 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles at 5:30 p.m. PST / 8:30 p.m. EST.
