Tove Dominates Jussi Award Nominees

The nominees have been revealed for this year’s Jussi Awards and are dominated by just three films: Oscar submission Tove has ten nominations while Games People Play has eight and Any Day Now has a respectable six.

Tove, a biopic of Moomins creator Tove Jansson, leads the field with ten nominations including Best Film, Best Director (Zaida Bergroth), Best Script (Eeva Putro) and Best Actress (Alma Pöysti). The film charts Jansson’s career from 1944 to 1956, during which time she was romantically involved with journalist Atos Wirtanen and theatre director Vivica Bandler.

Close behind with eight nominations is Games People Play, a comedy about the tragedy of being forever young where a group of old friends gather at a summer villa to celebrate a surprise birthday party. Nominations include Best Film, Best Director (Jenni Toivoniemi) and Best Actress (Emmi Parviainen).

Meanwhile, with six nominations is Any Day Now, loosely based on the experience of director Hamy Ramezan which tells the story of an Iranian refugee family in Finland waiting to hear whether they will be granted official asylum status. Nominations include Best Film, Best Director (Hamy Ramezan) and Best Actor (Shahab Hosseini).

The nominees were decided by a jury comprising producer Max Malka, director Juho Kuosmanen, screenwriter Khadar Ahmed, actors Eeva Litmanen and Kari-Pekka Toivonen, cinematographer Pekka Uotila, editor Katja Pällijeff, sound designer Salla Hämäläinen, composer Rossi, costume designer Kristiina Saha, make-up designer Eeva Hautamäki and film critic Kaisu Tervonen.
