Worst Person In The World Invited To Cannes
Compartment No 6 (Hytti nro 6) by Juho Kuosmanen and The Worst Person In The World (Verdens verste menneske) by Joachim Trier have been invited to compete for the Palme d’Or in the main competition at the 74th Festival de Cannes (6 – 17 July 2021).
In The Worst Person In The World, Julie (Renate Reinsve) is approaching 30 years old and in a long-term relationship with Aksel (Anders Danielsen Lie). But Julie is struggling to find a direction in life so leaves Aksel in the hope of something meaningful. But a year later she learns that he has become seriously ill so visits him in hospital where a new honesty emerges.
Set against the backdrop of 1980s Soviet Union, Compartment No 6 follows a young Finnish woman who flees a love triangle to take the Trans Siberian Railway to the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. She is forced to share her journey with a Russian miner who hates the world, but the long journey through the snow brings them closer and changes their perspective on life.
Meanwhile, Valdimar Jóhannsson’s mystery Lamb, about a childless couple who discover a mysterious newborn on their farm, and Eskil Vogt’s horror The Innocents, in which a group of children reveal their dark and mysterious powers when the adults aren’t looking, have been selected to compete in Un Certain Regard which aims to recognise young talent and encourage innovative work.
The 74th Festival de Cannes takes place from 6th to 17 July 2021.
